About the Center

"It's not just a dream anymore. We are close
to finding answers and preventing or even curing this
disease that is so costly in so many ways."

Mark Atkinson, PhD
Director, JDRF Gene Therapy Center for
the Prevention of Diabetes & its
Complications

Each day at the Shands/University of Florida medical complex, a cadre of internationally recognized scientists uncover new information in their quest to cure diabetes. Supported by funding from esteemed agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and American Diabetes Association, UF scientists are exploring answers through gene therapy, stem cell research and pancreatic transplants, just to name a few of the current areas of investigation.

In both the adult and pediatric clinics, held at the Shands Medical Plaza, endocrinologists armed with the latest discoveries in treatment modalities, provide patients with care aimed at enabling them to control their diabetes, thereby improving their daily quality of life.

Diabetes educators form the third cornerstone to this impressive triumvirate. Helping patients better manage their eating habits, utilize exercise and control their blood sugar, means that they'll be better able to confront the life-threatening complications of this silent killer.

Together, this team of committed health care professionals provide a Center of Excellence where patients and their families can be assured that they and their loved ones will receive the highest quality care supported by informed and advanced technologies which seek not just to treat, but to cure, diabetes.
